iPhone 3GSから搭載されたカメラのオートフォーカスですが、加速度センサーを利用し、本体が停止した状態になると、カメラを向けて写真を撮影する準備を始めたと判断し、画面中央にフォーカスエリアを当てるという仕組みを採用しているようです。

これによって、見かけ上、カメラを向けるだけでオートフォーカスが働いているように見えます。

ハードとOSを両方設計しているからこそ出来る技だと思いますが、OSだけ設計していると、もしハード側に加速度センサーがなかった場合、別の仕組みを考えなければならず、それを制御するためのソフトウェアの実装がさらに必要となり、結局仕様がどんどん増えることになります。
